Title: Forcing chicory
Post by: cleo on December 02, 2009, 15:48:36
If anyone has grown it,especially for the first time, now is about the time to start a few ready for Christmas.

Dig out the plant, chop off all the green top and put the root into a pot. Bury it to about an inch below  it`s crown and cover(I use those flower buckets often seen in supermarkets(Morrisons)

Put somewhere warm-like on top of the boiler and wait a while. It could be a little early yet but not so far off

My Italian relatives grow chicory in industrial quantities!
They don't dig it up, but cover it with massive heaps of soil which makes it a bit harder to clean, but does work.
Your method sounds much nicer.  :)

Now that is another thing-many`Italian varieties` can be forced as well as the standard witloof.
