I bought a new one last year complete with skinny monitor & paid much less than £500.
There is a company in Billingshurst ( you probably have a similar one closer to you, also hidden in a little industrial unit)
who built me a base unit to my specifications - you don't have to be too technical for this, just how many different slots & where you want them etc. I would advise that more of everything is best.
Hope this helps a bit.
Graceland - to be honest virtually any PC you buy now will be good enough to browse, listen to music etc. Photoediting is a littel more demanding but still pretty trivial for most PCs.
Dont get less tha 2 Gb Ram - get as big as HD as you can - say 500 Mb minimum - I always have two HDs - helps but not strictly needed for most tasks..
I'd get Windows 7 on it reather than Vista. ALways look at the warantee as well .. Dual core or even quad core is affordable these days..
I'd hesitate to reccommend any specific makes or models but this http://www.europc.co.uk/product.php?productid=131979 (http://www.europc.co.uk/product.php?productid=131979) is the sort of thing you can get for 300 (plus the Windows 7 upgrade fee)
