will they be ok or am I better covering them with more soil?
On Gardeners Question Time yesterday they had this query and the answer was unless we have a very severe Winter they will be O.K.
thanks, tommy, will see how they go ;D
The first ones are nearly always up in Nov. Regardless of what winter we have they will be OK we have had heavy snow in April in the middle of the daffodil show season but no problem. I will if the weather is reasonable to moorrow take some pictures of my show beds and you will see many already showing.
I always have some daffs that get excited a bit early and then just sit there through our cold winters which usually get to -15C with odd days below.
Last year was really bad with my outside thermometer dying when we got to -25C. The only daffs that failed were the ones in the two tubs I have sat on manhole covers in the front bed and which obviously got frozen to a mush.
Hi Obbelix, This is one thing that gets overlooked. All the bulbs like daffodils , tulips etc. are 100% hardy when growing in the ground but if they are in a container of any sort they can freeze form the sides and then the ROOTS die. I lost a lot of very expensive daff bulbs some years back when we moved house and had nowhere to protect my best bulbs that were in pots. :( You need to wrap the sides with bubble film but leave the top open so that you do not create a warm climate.
ah, that's a problem then, all mine are in pots :o
best do some damage limitation :)
Between the heavy showers this morning I managed to get a shot of this Narcissus in my show beds. It is called Rockall and is a small cup red & white bloom.I expect it to be in bloom first week in April. I have around 120 varieties that I grow for exhibition.

This one was open two weeks ago, usually December.

Narcissus Taffeta
I've noticed that my dafs that I planted in compost are up, yet the ones in the ordinary garden soil aren't. :P
No problem there are varieites that bloom in Dec and some that do not bloom until almost May so they all come through t different times.
