Title: Cunning plan needed for cabbages
Post by: tomatoada on November 18, 2009, 11:09:34
Has anyone got a plan for growing cabbages to produce a few all the year round?   I have studied the books and catalogues but got confused.

I just select varieties that are ready at different times of year then plant a few (5 or 6) every 3 -4 weeks during the appropriate sowing period.  If I get 3 or 4 out of the 5 or 6 planted that gives me one a week. Or more likely they all grow and I give some to neighbours then the rabbits get the next lot and I do without!

As to varieties I couldn't really say. Early cabbage I've done Duncan and April successfully but I'd need to check my records for the others. Oh and I do Savoys over winter.

Hispi are pretty easy and you can grow them in pots for a few weeks while waiting for a space to come available... they're a summer one that you sow from late winter (under glass) to summer, small and pointy....

Been off site for a while and only just noticed this. Last year I got a collection of cabbage seed from moreveg.com that covered the entire year. Not sure if they are still doing it

Very cheap too, though packet sizes seem quite small.  But then how many cabbages can you eat?

One row of Filderkraut should feed the average family for a year or so.....

That is some large cabbage.  Do they taste good or are they all size and no substance?
Presume that as it was bred for Sauerkraut the taste is unimportant.

Thanks for replies.  I have some packets of cabbage seeds.
I want dates of when to plant the seeds , when they are likely to be ready for transplanting and when for harvesting, to give me a few cabbages each month.  The packets are very vague about timing.  I use Tee Gees almanac for a lot of things but he only mentions a transplant month for Spring cabbage.

They're supposed to be very good eating.... a German friend of mine (who didn't bomb our chippy) tells me that you have to use good cabbage for sauerkraut otherwise it tastes "wrong"
