Title: killing tree stubs
Post by: mormor on November 15, 2009, 08:53:28
Has anyone  else heard that banging copper nails into unwanted tree stubs will get them to die?
I was told you can kill trees that way!
Or are there other suggestions about getting rid of an unwanted tree stub (which is between two sheds..a metre from the closest!)

Please help!

Copper nails are a myth, the best solution is to dig the stump out which won't take long to do with a grubbing mattock.

Try TNT if you can get hold of it.
Failing that then a good dig around the roots, followed by a heaavy haul and chain.

Enough copper, and enough time, and the tree will die, but some species are rather good at regenerating from stumps, like ash and elm.  What sepcies of tree is it?

The head & handle are often sold separately, the head just fits onto a standard pick handle. The most common size is 5lb I have a 7lb one I bought from a builders merchants which I find I can work faster with.
The grubbing mattock head looks like this:

When assembled it looks like this:
