Title: Heathrow 3rd Runway
Post by: OllieC on November 06, 2009, 12:39:05
The campaign to stop a third runway at Heathrow rumbles on, and Airpolot are still hoping that more people will join their campaign... There are many good reasons for opposing this runway, most of which are detailed on the website below.

If you would like to become a beneficial owner of the plot they have there, follow the link below!

Sorry, but I don't think this forum should be used for this sort of thing.
It has not been proved that climate change is only due to man.

Ah, sorry tomatoada, you appear to have misunderstood. This is not a thread discussing man made climate change so I'm not going to do it here. It is link to a group who do not want a certain thing built in a certain place, for which there are several very good reasons.

Please tomatoada or anyone else, if you want a discussion about climate change, start your own thread outlining the scientific reasoning behind your doubts (preferably supported by facts, not just Daily Mail/Jeremy Clarkson ramblings about what you would like to be the case) and I (or one of the people on here who are even more qualified) will happily explain to you where you are wrong. Or even concede that you are right.

Otherwise, on what to me is a very important campaign, please stay on topic.

Yeh! wot she says.

Anyway I was told the other day it was cows that were causing global warming. So price of milk should be rising pretty soon.

I lost count of the time global change was mentioned in the blurb, so don't hark on about loads of good reasons.

The campaign is organised by Greenpeace so is always going to go on about Global Warming a bit, but some of the other good reasons for opposing it include (off the top of my head and in no particular order):

A whole community is going to be split up to make room for it.
It's in the wrong place to be Britain's main airport.
It has very poor car parking already.
It has no easy rail connection.
It's a horrible place to drive to.
It is very unlikely to ever be needed.
It creates a huge amount of noise pollution for people near the flight path.
The holding stacks around Heathrow are already near bursting at busy times. Moving more air traffic there will make it worse.

I generally fly a couple of times a year, and am not saying "close all airports". I am saying that this is the wrong thing in the wrong place, and inviting others who may be interested to join in the campaign.

It's a shame that some people always come out against anything with an environmental element and start bleating on about how it's all a conspiracy. That is a discussion for a different place.

A hell of a lot of the objections are down to nimbyism. The airport for me has the best airport links in the south. I prefer heathrow to all the others with its hourly coach timetable. No need for trains, cars, parking etc. How many people got their houses cheaper because of the airport being nearby? As for stacking we are in 2009 the technology is there to cope with it.

Well I will give you that, but it is not bleating. It is being p!ssed off with being charged more money for everything that is connected with global warming/climate change. It has got away from it's original purpose and is mostly spin and doom mongering. I have to get a new truck now just to drive and work near London because of the emission scales that have been spun out by the London Council or pay their excessive charges. So if you live near an airport hard luck!

The London Low Emmission Zone has nothing to do with Carbon and Climate Change.  It's about polution in London which is at present the worse in the country.

"The LEZ aims to reduce traffic pollution by deterring the most polluting diesel-engined lorries, buses, coaches, minibuses and large vans from driving within the city."

I am totally for this and if you have to buy a new lorry to drive through London or pay the charge then hard luck but don't seek to blame it on climate change.  I live and cycle here and dont want your fumes!

Heathrow 3rd Runway - Dammed if we do, Dammed if we don't

If we have a third, Ace will be over here more often
If we dont Corny wont be able to have so many trips.

Not sure where I stand on a third runway.  Probably best not to stand on a runway at all!!!
The green in me says no - the Lononder in me says yes...

ACE - if you and your emmissions tested trunk are ever near Barriedale or Forest Hill then your welcome for a cuppa!  ;D

I'm all for Boris Island, or another airport 'oop north' if we need that much capacity, people won't need to travel south to use the extra runway.

Whatever happened to the explosion of video-conferencing to reduce business travel?
