Title: Brand new D.M's breaking in tips
Post by: lushy86 on November 04, 2009, 19:50:24
Something troll free - I hope  :)

Today i took delivery of my first pair of new Doctor Marten boots for about 20 years, got them on ebay for a song - Due to my mid life crisis and seing a Specials gig in a couple of weeks, totally reverting back to my youth  :)

They are lovely shiny black (wanted oxblood but too pricey) 14 hole and are stiff as a board - anyone got any tips for breaking them in?

Woohoo lucky you! I just got new kickers!! Still got the DMs in the wardrobe. I would suggest wearing them round the house until they are uncomfy then take them off and let your feet/ankles recover. When recovered repeat until you can wear them without worrying. Then go for a walk. Repeat until it works.

Edited to point out that if you break the boots in you don't need to break your skin!!

Ah the nostalgia of DMs. Still remember my cherry red 10 holes complete with sta-press blue trousers.
I too have been reverting to my youth - missed the specials in London but judging by the state of some people the next day a wonderful time was had.
Went to see Magazine in March and going to see Hugh Cornwall (Stranglers) in a couple of weeks.

I think I used to cover mine in dubbing, jump up and down on them and then wear them till my feet bleed!

surgical spirit on the feet might help. I think walkers use it to toughen the feet. Just done a google & yes they do.

Have read that weeing on the leather helps! Or maybe you could ask in a bike shop for that stuff you rub on saddles to soften them?

I'd make sure you have loads of plasters, or even a thicker dressing and some gaffer tape if you intend to walk very far.

Should be a great gig, takes me back to my youth too!

You could try wearing a pair of  nylon socks next to the skin with a pair of cotton socks over the top, this cuts down the friction on the skin and helps prevent blisters.

All good tips, thanks all - not sure about the weeing on them - only used to do that when trying to balance over the loo in a grotty venue after a few sherberts - seems sacreligious now!  :)

And hey - troll free - result!  ;D

Can't think of anything else to try (I've heard the peeing one but don't know if it works), other than going into some kind of meditative trance while wearing them! OM !
Never had new ones, always ended up with 2nd hand (off mates) and love em - my current pair are my allotment boots  ;D

I used to rub lanolin oil in to the inside surface of the boot and then leave overnight, a couple of applications eased the pain of breaking in dramatically. In theory you could rub it on the exterior too, but massaging in some saddle soap or "Aussie leather conditioner" would probably be easier. Failing that, a meditative trance sounds like the way to go!  ;D

How thick am I??

I looked at the heading of this and thought it meant that your Doc Martens were breaking in their tips!

I've never owned a pair so I thought that 'tips' was a particular part of them.

Saw the Specials at the V festival this year..........suitably embarrassed 16 yr old daughter and her mates by dancing along in broad daylight.... :-[

OH recommended a very forum suitable solution, bury them on your plot for a few weeks, this will soften them up nicely...(and he wasn't joking!) ;D

Took months of pain to break in mine, worth it tho! Got a bit soft after that and bought Monkey Boots instead, easier, but not as stylish!

;)

OH still has all his original gear, tonic jacket, sta prest, brogues with proper blakey's, the lot.  when we went to London for the gig it felt like I was a teenager again going out with my boyfriend all dressed up in our finery - superb! My 15 year old daughter is coming with us to the next one in Brighton - she thinks its cool at the moment, wonder if she'll feel the same once she's been out with us!  ;D ;D

Thick socks! you reminded me of 4 years ago at the annual punk fest I go to, bought a new pair of DM's a day later I was walking around the fest like John Merrick!!!  :D I can laugh now!

Have a ball, well a mosh for me at the gig, wish I was going! and take some plasters!

Funny isnt it.  If you had told the 15 yr old me that in 30 years I would be most interested in growing fruit and veg I would have laughed you out the house.
I was a punk (sorta!) - growing veg - not very punk!!

Which punk fest Biscombe?

Two pairs of socks, wear them round the house as much as possible, smile through the pain  :o 8)

Lovely DMs....it'll be worth it in the end. After about 4 years they turn into the comfiest footwear ever.

We saw Neville Staples + band and then the Specials en masse this year at various outdoor things...they were fab! We skanked ourselves silly!

Have grown up a little bit and got calf length ones now, but with a zip! ;D

Absolutely gutted that on one of the boots, the zip has broken, keep telling myself that I should have gone for the proper laced ones....

Now need to find a proper cobblers that will put a new zip in, am finding that they are few and far between >:(

Hiya all, newb here, got my plot in August, woot!

I was a punk way back when...bit more of a hippy now ;)

A good way to break new leather boots in is to play with them in your hands, bending and flexing the leather to soften it, works better when the leather is warm and concentrate where they are likely to rub.
A liberal application of Connolly Hide food will feed the leather whilst you're at it...and your hands will be wonderfully soft afterwards!

A friend of mine puts his under a door mat then jumps on them  :o

I have a very treasured pair of rare woodland flowers Docs, will post a pic if some kindly soul will tell me how, do I need to link from photobucket or sommat?

Hi Knottygal, welcome to A4A.  Yes, you can use photobucket or become a paid up member to post direct.  Good tips, never heard of connolly hide food, is it a horsey thing?  Congratulations on your plot, its so exciting, stick around here you'll get loads of good advice.

Don't ya just luv me Docs?!

And a couple of pics of the plot, as it was

and so far. Just filled the first row of beds with garlic and onions!

And lushy, yes it's a horsey thing (another one of my passions!) but a superb product for anything made from leather such as shoes, clothes, leather furniture as well as saddles...expensive but a little goes a long long way!
