Title: asparagus and stawberries - how big shouldmy beds be?
Post by: TISH on November 03, 2009, 15:02:27
A planning question - I want to plant 20 asparagus crowns (fancy the 4 variety mix thompson & morgan do), and about 20 strawberry runners (in seperate beds) - and want to start preparing the beds for them to go into.

I can't seem to get my head around the spacing diagrams in books - do they have to go in a single row or can you have a double row? I also never know how close to the paths you can plant things which books never seem to mention.

Noticed they sell autumn planting asparagus but not sure I want to take a chance on that since mostly everything written says to plant them in spring.

I would plant asparagus in a 4ft wide bed, with crowns planted in a double row. You'll need a bed 15ft long for 20 crowns. ;)
