I finally decided to buy an onion hoe, WOW its brilliant, I can't believe how I've been managing all this time without one. Its sooooo handy and not just around the onion set. Well worth it and wish I had bought one years ago ;D
Give us a picture, never heard of a dedicated onion hoe. But it still sounds very useful.
jayb
is it the one with the 3 sided head
Maybe you know it as a swan-necked hoe?
With a short (15") handle?
Like this?

I have to admit to now having both of these and I love them equally ;D
have wanted one of these short handled hoes for quite some time, just haven't gotten round to buying one, maybe i should whisper in santa's ear.
I have an onion hoe and I agree its a great tool. Much easier to use when hand weeding than a trowel or handfork, especially on the clay soil on my plot.
I'm also asking Santa for one, but looking at them there seem to be three completely different types, ??? :-\ which one is the best for the job. :-\ ;D ;D ;D
Go for a bog standard one,the one I've got cost me a fiver from Melton Mowbray market. And as Jayb as said you wonder how you managed with out it.

i think we'd all like that for a fiver!!
In a euro shop in Germany, for ONE euro, I got a short handled onion hoe with three sharp prongs facing the other way, and the combination is lethal to weeds. I expected it to fall apart, but I have used it for about three years almost daily. It is very satisfying to gouge and prong and stab and scrape with the one tool.
This looks great. How have I never seen one before I wonder? Think this will also be on my Christmas List. Thanks JB, :) busy_lizzie
I have a variety of hoe and cultivator heads from Wolf with a selection of short, medium and long handles so I can use them on my knees, bending or standing up. I have one of those double headed dooberries with 3 prongs one way and a smooth, sharp edge the other and love that for close work but the double bladed push-me-pull-you head with the wavy edge is my favourite for decapitating weeds with the long handle.
Best bought in the sales or early spring when they have special offers.
