Maybe I'd join a US forum first and ask everyone else what they were going to grow.

Join Daves Garden forums, excellent  and also ask the locals, it would depend on where you are. I have gardened in California, Oregon and Washington and BC where I live. Here it is better in the part of BC that I live in, long growing season and mild winters.

Where is the area , maybe I can point you in the direction of some local sites. I can help you with some good seed suppliers for sure..

It depends where in the states you are, I`d see what the neighbours are growing.

In Florida I think I could grow squash of all kinds, toms and peppers,
in California theres a lot less water and I`d want to try to work with
minimal irrigation because its just not sustainable. Probably deep
rooted fruit trees, Olives and apricots.
In Michigan and Ohio I`d be looking into russian toms and squash with a short growing season `cus its too darn cold in the winter to do much at all.

I think that in the middle you get less extreme conditions.

Same as the UK really you have to work with local conditions in a sustainable way.

Best of luck, keep us posted.
