Which potato varieties will you growing in 2010 and why
HI...CHARLOTTE AND MARRIS PEER BOTH GOOD CROPPERS AND ALLWAYS DO WELL ON MY SOIL. WHAT WILL YOU GROW
JIMTHEWORZEL
Lady Christl, Kestrel and Belle de Fontenay. They all seem pretty disease and pest proof and have great flavours. i've grown them all before.
Kestrel for sure, still on the lookout for a waxy early with that earthy flavour though.
Swift. They just melted in the mouth & Vivaldi, the dieters friend.
Just googled them to make sue Maggie. At least 1/3 fewer calories & 26% less carbs & I like the taste too. Creamy mash without all the fat. I pour Good Oil (hemp)over my potatoes & veg if not having gravy.
I grew Swift in pots. When boiled ( for 15 mins or so) they just fell apart. Are they just good for mash, or did I do something wrong? I too am looking for a good early waxy salad potato.
Epicure, Red Dukes, Aura
Picasso, Anya, Desiree... and lots of others in small quantities
:)
While we're here. Does anyone know any good online sources for buying in tiny quantities - even one or two tubers? I have one place in my bookmarks, any others? Thanks..
Earlypea, usually in Spring there is a special offer on one of the seed sites for free seed potatoes. Last year it was Hunter & Vivaldi. Some of the garden centres sell them seperately at so much per container then you could mix & match. A bit like Woolies Pick & Mix. IYSWIM.
Earlypea - which one do you have bookmarked? I've found T&M do a 5 tuber pack - bit on the pricey side but good if you only want to try a few or have limited space. Not an on line resource but there are potato days across the country where you can buy in small quantities - haven't been to one yet but will try and get to the Brighton one this year
I'm going to try Lady Chrystl as per recommendations on here ;D
I picked this address up from a thread on www.chat.allotment.org.uk
Brookside Nurseries
http://angelicgroup.com/catalog/
but their spuds aren't up yet.
I saw the five packs, but it worked out at about the same price to buy a whole pack from Alanromans. Quite a rip-off!
Nearest potato day - too far. Garden centres near me - rubbish. Freebies no good because there are particular varieties I want.
Also, I did come across a supplier a couple of weeks ago offering singles for 50p each, but for the life of me I can't locate it again. If anyone knows I'd be most grateful :)
Last year I ended up with an embarrassment of seed potatoes, enough for a small farm. It wasn't actually that expensive but the waste annoyed me.
Earlypea - I see Suttons do a Patio Potato refill pack, 5 tubers each of Rocket, Vivaldi and Charlotte for £4.95. Shame about postage, £3.95! Don't know if it can be bought in any garden centres.
Earlypea - I don't know where you are, but there are a lot of potato days all over the country in January/February, where there is an enormous choice and you can buy one or as many as you like. There is just the entrance (about £1-2) and no postage costs, they sell other stuff too, seeds, seed swaps, plants, etc etc so is a good day out as well.
Here is the link to ours - we've make it a date every year http://www.potatoday.org/ (http://www.potatoday.org/)
Kestrel - always a heavy cropper for us, a few arran pilot, international kidney (jersey royal) - these were brilliant for us this year. We had a huge crop and they still tasted good when they got bigger, anya and finally rooster.

Clearly it's a poorly maintained site as there are ads for prescription medication inserted into some descriptions such as the one on the main seed page.
Looking at their site more closely you can still view the list of 85 Varieties they offered last year @ £1.25 per kg with postage costs of:
£4.99 for any quantity up to 2kg;
£6.99 for any quantity up to 4kg;
£7.99 for any quantity up to 30kg
http://www.brooksidenurseries.co.uk/print.php
You can also see a copy of the pre-order form which is obviously from the end of the season as it only lists a handful of those varieties.
http://www.brooksidenurseries.co.uk/spw.php?unit=singles
It seems you pre-order the potatoes you want (they put the order forms up in November ish & continue selling until March or whenever they sell out) then they contact you from January onwards to sort out the payment & delivery. If you order individual tubers they weigh them & charge you £1.25 per kg + P+P.
Irrespective of the poor maintenance it does look like an interesting site for seed potatoes, it's a shame there isn't more places that sell them like that.

You may be thinking of http://www.victoriananursery.co.uk/vegetable_seeds/ (at the bottom of the page) the prices are misleading though as you have to purchase in multiples of 5 with a minimum order of 10 of each variety you buy.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Seem to have hijacked the thread there :-\ oops, sorry.
Thanks Baccyman, I couldn't find last year's stock, but the viagra worried me too. And you were right it was Victoriannursery for what I thought was 50p a spud, not much variety though.
Just to say - Since posting I got myself a personal A4A shopper :D so hijack over. Back to spuds.
I will not be growing any potatoes this year ;D
Me neither. Unless I can find some self-earthing self-cleaning varieties!
Pink Fir Appple (for the flavour)
King Edwards ditto
Desiree for the yield of decent sized bakers
Sarpo (something, whichever ones it is Jayb has just sent to me :D) for the blight resistance and to find out if I like them cos the jury seems to be out on them as far as culinary quality goes.
Possibly some others... have broken in some more space on the site so will have more room.... so I guess I'll be looking for a very early first early and something that will qualify as either an early maincrop or else a decent second early....
Also in the same vein of things, if my Oca crop works out OK this year then there'll be a row of Oca and I might look for some other wierds as well, sweet potatos in the polytunnel maybe?
Probably not Jerusalem Artichokes... they taste nice and made a lovely soup when roasted up with a squash but they do make me fart somethign terrible

I don't earth. I plant deeper. I don't normally need to clean either. plant into newspaper and compost.

Fartichokes!! :-X
first earlys 10 for 3.50 p and p included in price.
http://www.janelanenursery.co.uk/seedpots.html
Noted!! Thanks very much.
definitely blue belle, pink fir apple and aura
Glad to see i'm not the only one not bothering. Too much like hard work i'm afraid for the returns i got.
Rocket
Kestrel
Main, undecided.
;D ;D ;D
Swift & Rocket (but I use them like an early second early when they have much better taste and texture)
Might do Kestrel again - very clean and good mash, but they don't yield very well for me.
Did a main crop called spirit this year which was almost blight-imune, so might give that a go.
Also grew bio gold like a second early and they crop well and are tasty so might do them - and they're a small seed so you get lots for your money.
I go to the potato day at Whitchurch (http://www.potatoday.org/).
Kestrel, just loved them this year. I'm going to try Lady Balfour as they seem to produce large spuds for baking.
Lady Chrystl - really early fleeced
Arran Pilot - great 'new' taste
Red Dukes - earliest tastiest bakers
Charlotte - early for salads then leave for bakers
Kestrel - slug resistant
Picasso or Ambo - bulks up b4 blight hits
Sarpo Axona - blight resistant
Well for us its...
Home guard
Charlotte
Smile
Maris Piper
Not doing many main crop.
I grew Picasso one year and they were very nice as chunky baked chips, but the slugs ate them something rotten.
No one has mentioned Sante which I am thinking Of growing next year. Any info.?
just ordered my first ever potatoes, very exciting!
1st earlies : Orla + Aaran Pilot (recomendations in books and on the forum)
2nd Earlies: Kestrel (suposed to have good overall resistance to nasty things), Yukon Gold (like the taste), Charlotte (also because I like the taste)
Early Maincrop: Belle de Fontenay (raymond blanc says its the best tasting potato, although it is meant to be a slug magnet) & Remarka as the Alan Roman website says its tasty and worth a go - supossed to be a good baker)
Altogether I ordered 8 kg - not really sure how many individual seed pot's that will be but hopefully can squeeze them all in. No idea how I will have enough egg cartons or space to chit them all though...
I did Rooster for the first time this year and got a big sack full from two 3m row. Not too much damage and they are good all-rounders and make the best roasties EVER ;D so they are back on the list
Did Cara and Picasso as well 3 rows of each and still only one sack :( so giving Marfona a try in 2010
I'm going to give Grawc's bedding method a go - but using shredded paper, what do you think? I used leaf mould this year and that seemed to introduce more pests to the trench and more holes in the spuds ???
Like every year - - Pentland Square, a lot of potatoes and the best taste of all ;D
Than - - Desiree, - - Anya, - - Pentland Javelin, - - Wilja heavy crop and good taste,
and a blue one, probably Vitaline or Edzel.
Tried Vivaldi- bad taste and bad crop here.....
JBA Seed Potatoes (http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk/home.html) sell some varieties as individual tubers. I havent quite made up my mind yet, but will be choosing from Rocket, Swift, Golden Wonder (makes lovely roast potatoes!), King edward, Valor and Pink Fir Apple
Kitty Katt
I loved my PFA and charlottes this year, wasn't that impressed with Rocket and Pentland Javelin, might try different earlies and maybe king edwards
Lushy x
Nicola for me, no pests and diseases and they taste fab ;D/ shades x
Rooster - they were really yummy, especially baked
Charlottes - somehow managed to lose these this year so will try again
Blue Danube - because they were 99p at T&M and they will be blue when my little boy digs them up;)
Maybe king edward as they do taste so good, worried about the blight factor though.
We had loads of arran pilot this year but wouldn't do them again.
