Title: DIY Greenhouse
Post by: Psi (Pronounced 'Si'!) on October 25, 2009, 11:41:03
Hi all

I am keen to get growing under glass on my plot and have earmarked a 11ftx7ft spot I could use.  i really like Simmo's polytunnel but I will find it hard to get scaffold poles and freebie blue pipe so it I went that route i'd need to purchase pipe and sheeting which might get expensive.

Over the weekend i've started thinking of making a greenhouse out of corrugated PVC sheets and 2x2 timber.  i calculated this will come in well under £150 so not bad really.  Has anyone done this?  I've looked at sheets and wickes do a range which might be worth going for - its about £8 for a 3x660 sheet, though ideally I'd like larger sheets really.  Only real problem I foresee is how the sheets will join at the corners and will it be possible to get it reasonably air tight?  Obviously still to reallyplan it but would love to hear other views and whether anyone has done something like this.  Cheers.

Along similar lines these are relatively cheap & simple to build.

you could use expanding foam to seal up any gaps.

I'm surprised by how confident everyone seems about corrugated PVC - I've had such poor experiences with it that I'm keen to find out why.

It may be something to do with support against vibration, or sun exposure etc.

I think the best way to find out is to start a new thread.

Hope you can offer some comments.

Cheers.

the few folk that have used the stuff on our site have all regretted it, it ain't stable in sunlight, and becomes really brittle in 2 - 3 yrs, leading to a massive disposal problem.  ;)
