Title: Saving Photos to Memory sticks.
Post by: Emagggie on October 25, 2009, 09:50:48
We are about to dump AOL and our old computer. I have all my photos organised on Picassa, and I would like to save them on a memory stick as a back up before I change. I have fiddled about but I am concerned that  I'll lose them as I don't really know what I'm doing ::)
Please can anyone advise me if this can be done and how to?

i have just invested in a hard drive for this very reason. it was 70 quid but my mate got his for 20,think its a more permanent solution than a memory stick

I have bought one in readiness for the switch over Elvis. ;D
I have deleted loads of copies of photos or maybe they were the originals- I don't know. I'm worried that as soon as I empty my recycle bin I'll lose some, so I just want to save what I've left in Picassa.  I had a nasty experience once before, and had to retrieve loads with the help of Brian the Brain. It was a huge job, not one I want to repeat. Can I just put picassa on the ext. hard drive as it is and then empty the bin? This may seem daft to many, but my popularity in this household will be zilch if I mess it up.

Emagggie,

The best thing to do is to get all your pics together in one place on your old PC - so spend a night searching your PC for pics and copying them to one location.  With a little luck all your pics will be in the " My Pictures" folder as that is where most transfer programs will put them..Then you can copy and paste to a memory stick/portable hard drive.  I would get a little portable hard drive as you can then use it as a a backup device in future.  As long as you copy the files then the originals will be left intact on your old PC so you can always fire it up again later.
Remember - your pics are not "in Picasa" - Picasa is just a program for organising\viewing\editing your pics...all your pics are in folders on a hard drive in your PC and Picasa just references them. In Picasa you can right click on any pic and there is a menu item for locating the pic on your PC so it is fairly simple to see where they are.  You cant put picasa on your portable drive to achieve what you want.
It is fairly easy to do  but impossible to give exact steps but if all your pics are in one folder you can right click the folder and select copy - then right click on the memory stick and select paste.

Within picasa there is a backup pics option which may be more use to you..
