Title: Mysterious Log Muncher
Post by: Chrissie on October 18, 2009, 11:47:35
Can anyone throw light on this mystery? ???  Something has attacked and chewed this silver birch log in my logpile overnight, leaving shreds of fresh wood all around, and I'd love to know which critter could be the culprit. We don't have any squirrels around as far as I know.

Thanks!

I've seen lots of rotten logs which have been chewed like that, but I've never seen what does it.

It,s not a mammal, all the chips are too narrow. My best guess is an insect eating bird, Tits will peel bark to reach grubs as will Nuthatch and Treecreeper. Split the log to see what,s in it?
