It's time for a new mattress :)
Our first mattress was a joined up sprung/spring mattress and then a join went AWOL sometime in the 1990's!
Our second mattress had the "individual" springs, and one of these has recently decided to "break out", much to hubby's chagrin (as it's his side and pops up on both sides even when I turn it).
We are thinking about a "memory foam" mattress now.
Any feed back on these?

we got a superb memory foam mattress from the mobility shop, of all places!! after a couple of operations on my back, it was definately a good move. get an orthopaedic one, with the memory foam built in to the top of it.
My neck would creak and crack in the morning, so I tried a memory foam pillow that sombody lent me.
In the middle of the night, my body rolled over, but my head was quite secure in the pillow, that made me wake up with a bit of a :o
Maybe you should not use the pillow without the mattress, and every body who has one that I have spoken to says they love them.
The mattresses in the cottage we stay in in Yorkshire were so bad that we had to say something to the owner and her quick fix was a memory mattress on top of the existing one. Brilliant!! Very comfortable. A daughter has the type that Tonybloke mentions, she loves it.
We have a memory foam mattress- doesn't help me sleep any better, but it's more comfortable!
After a couple of brandies I can sleep anywhere
we got a memory foam mattress last year, I can now sleep lots better than before, we were so impressed we bought a topper to take on holiday as , like emaggie says, the mattreses in holiday accomodation can be :o
also bought memory foam pillows, it just helps, never used to get a good night's sleep before(well, for 6 years), now get 6 hours straight through ;D
Yep I agree - although I only so far have a "topper" and a couple of pillows!
I find the topper absolutely brilliant - I had a down topper before which had got thin and patchy so this is absolutely perfect.
I got two different types of pillow - one contoured which is quite good???!! It is tiny though and I use another pillow with it - so probably not v.good and the other is fairly firm and "big". So not convinced on pillows but am looking to replace mattress at some later stage with a good quality memory foam one!

I must confess I was worried at first(hot sweats and all that) but it keeps me warm in winter and cool in summer, plus no turning and a cover I can unzip and wash when necessary :)
I have a pocket sprung mattress with a layer of memory foam built into the top layer. It is very comfortable.
In our tourer caravan my husband and I both have memory foam toppers that unroll and fit on top of the beds. We couldn't do without them.
Because of my arthritis I have to have a comfortable bed. Like Emaggie and manicscousers, we too have experienced sleepless nights in holiday accommodation. This is one of the reasons we have our own caravan because we know we will get a decent nights sleep. ;D
I have a memory foam pillow but don't use it as it is so uncomfortable. Mind you, I did buy it at Lidl and it was very cheap. ::)
I would definitely recommend a memory foam mattress. Buying a bed or mattress is so important as, on average, we spend a third of our lifetime in bed. The more you can spend the better.
Thank you for all the replies, guess we'll go with one then :)

a ditch is fine
If it works how come you are still awake at 3:00am... I find it can put me to sleep still in the pub... :-[

Give it a rest for a while, ;)
My mum swears by her topper, she needs it with her illness.
We will get one too next year, I have used a memory foam pillow, it doesn't look comfy......but it really is :D
I bought a memory foam topper last year, and thought it was horrible. It felt hot and sweaty just lying on for a few minutes and it smelt really toxic.
I moved it into the hall as the smell was so bad I couldnt have it in my flat, and it ended up on Freecycle.
Google 'memory foam outgassing' and it might put you off buying one!

:o :o :o Ace, you are sooooooooooo naughty! ;D ;D ;D
Thanks for that extra bit of info' lewic. :)
Not all memory foam outgasses, some of the foam described as green or eco-friendly still contains chemicals in addition to the plant materials that give it the green credentials & can still outgas but the foam labelled as organic does not contain anything artificial therefore does not outgas, is odourless & non toxic. Unfortunately the word organic frequently makes a big difference to the price tag.
A well designed memory foam mattress will be sufficiently aerated to prevent you feeling hot & sweaty.
Once you choose a mattress you should try & find some reviews of it before buying.
Stella works. :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D
