Title: Gooseberry cuttings
Post by: killerflies on October 06, 2009, 13:09:57
Hi all,

I see that there are a few posts already on A4A re: gooseberry cuttings, BUT....

How long after taking a cutting would you expect that it would be before you had an established bush producing fruit?

The bush is "Invicta".

I have a few 12inch cuttings taken, with all shoots removed except for the top 4.

Any secrets to increasing survival rates of the cuttings?

Beir bua!!

old method is to creat a slit by digging a spade in an wiggling it to create a narrow v tip grit or sharp sand into it and immerse the cutting material as deep as you need

the key is to then stick the spade in parallel the the v and repeat - this will really firm in the cuttings ensuring that there is good contact with the soil

I never water mine in

let nature take its course - I win more than I lose

transplant into final position or pots as they start to grow away in spring

Well if you get half as much rain as we do here in the west of Ireland........there is certainly no need to water in!!  :P

I would guess that if your cuttings root by spring, and can be replanted into their final position, they will spend the rest of next year putting on fresh growth
I think goosberries are like redcurrants and fruit on last previous years growth :-\
You may get a handful of fruit per plant the following year, but nothing serious till the third year onwards
