Post by: BAC42 on October 02, 2009, 18:52:45
Do all Blackberries fruit on last year's canes? or like Raspberries do some fruit on the current year's growth.
Advice please.

Rampant blackberries everywhere here in East Sussex. Chop them back, next year they spring back. So maybe they do both: last year's canes AND this year's.

I think it's last year's canes. In the first year they just grow a long way very fast!

Last year's canes are minimal for the berries. They come up next year on this year's growth.

Best to slash and burn the old wood so that the plant can concentrate on making new berries on the newer wood.

We train our new canes to the left one year and the right the next. It makes it so much easier to take out the canes that have fruited this year instead of having to untangle the spitefulthings.
