Would anyone like a few collard seeds?
i wouldn't mind trying a few. are they collard greens?
are you hankering after anything?
I wouldn't mind trying a few. is there anything you would like yourself?
Yes, they are collard greens. My American friends brought me the seeds a few years ago and I've grown them every year since. My husband really likes them.
These are seeds I've saved from this year's crop.
I can't think of anything I need at the moment, thanks.
If you both PM me your addresses, I'll get some off to you.
Hi Squash64 could I try some, I had to google then to find out what they are.

When should they be planted? I already have some, but I'm not sure what to do with them.

I'm by no means an expert Robert, but I plant them in early spring in trays in the greenhouse then outdoors when they are big enough. I don't grow any other brassicas apart from these.
Collard greens are popular in the produce dept on this side of the pond, very good for you.
Down in the southern states they have pigs feet and collard greens.
We don't, we have them just like any other dark greens.
Mostly if they have cabbage over here it's as cabbage rolls or coleslaw, they wouldn't know what to do with a nice Greyhound cabbage, qahtan
may I ask for some please?
I would love to grow these as one of my first spring crops

The seeds have been sent to those who asked for them.
Hope they grow!
Would anyone like a few collard seeds? Yes please but what are they? Had a quick google and they seem to be spring greens, but seems an odd time to plant them.
My spring greens were sown in July and are just waiting for a drop of rain to be planted out.

Yes, they are similar to spring greens. My friends brought me a packet of seeds from the US where they are very popular in the southern states.
I'm offering the seeds now because I've just collected them from the plants. I will sow more in the early spring, they grow very quickly.
I have just a few left - would you like them?

I was slightly confused at first as your writing on the envelope looked exactly like my sisters.
Just got back from being away to find your seeds have arrived thanks again for your generosity
You are all welcome, good luck with them!
Has everyone who asked for them had them now? Hope I didn't forget anyone.
got mine thanks again :) and i shall pass some onto graceland :)
Looking forward to sowing mine. Many thanks.
I have been doing a bit of reading about collards. How big are the plants? I hate brassica leaves so it will only be my OH eating them, so how many plants do you recommend.

I took this photo of a plant this morning. I put a florist type bucket next to it to give an idea of the size.

Sorry, forgot about this.
Difficult to say how many you would need, but they keep producing new leaves all summer so maybe three or four plants?
so can you just cut off what you need and leave the plant to carry on growing ?

Yes, that's what I do.
thanks Betty :)
It might not be very clear from the photo that the plant now has a longish stem with all the leaves near the top. All the lower leaves have been picked, leaving lots at the top still to pick.

So it's a non-hearting cabbage. I knew there were such things, but they disappeared long ago on this side of the Atlantic.
They haven't quite disappeared. There was an Irish one called 'Delaway' from County Mayo in the 2009 Heritage Seed Library catalogue which I was hoping to get my hands on. They describe it as ' a dark green, spring cabbage.....pick by the leaf and it will regrow like spinach'
They say best sown in August for this one.
Glad they're still about. I had looked, but I hadn't found anything.
Robert MoreVeg do some!

Yes I grew that one... but mistakenly planted it as a spring/summer cabbage and wondered why it never hearted up... :-[
Thanks, I didn't have Moreveg bookmarked.
