AG's can be buggers to get going sometimes.... try to get a Hundredweigt, Sumo or Big Max as a backup.... nothing like as big as an AG but way more reliable....

Best method for pumpkins (seems the norm on my site)... dig a four foot wide hole about a foot deep, pile up well rotted manure to a heap 2 feet above ground level in the hole, case the heap with the soil. Start your AG off at the start of April indoors in the warm in a 5 " or bigger pot, plant out early May under a big cloche, harden off (you'll have to have some early mornings I'm afraid) and you'll be several weeks ahead of the more normal technique with squas which is to harden tem off in the pot before planting out having sown late April... as an insurance you can always start off a spare or spares in late April. These timings are for Oxford, you could be forward a week on the south coast, back a week for Manchester/Leeds, back a couple of weeks for Newcastle/Cumbria and I'd be looking for a different technique for significantly north of that.... Also good idea to hand pollinate with other varieties or at least from another plant. Finally AG's are monstrous plants once they get going, 10 feet by 10 feet per plant isn't too much, limit them to one good fruit, once they've set it and its swelling away remove all other female flowers as soon as they are seen......

Quotedig a four foot wide hole about a foot deep

Wow that is a huge hole.  I thought I was being generous with a one foot wide hole filled with manure and another bucket full as a mulch.  Seems I only had a quarter of the necessary S***.  So are we saying more than a barrow load per plant?

This year I bought seeds of Atlantic Giant and Sumo from Robinsons www.mammothonion.co.uk

I never save seeds from my own pumpkins, not even last years 160 pound one because I think they cross too easily and wouldn't come true to seed.

I think my biggest one this year is a Sumo.  I'll find out on 18th October when we have the competition.

Pic taken last week with my plot-neighbour's help.
