Title: Pink veal?
Post by: grannyjanny on September 27, 2009, 14:56:29
I saw an item on TV recently about pink veal & wondered if anyone had tried it & also what peoples thought are on the subject.

Jan,

I prefer the darker meat, as it has been round the fields a bit more.
Age is another factor, I am a person who would if possible not eat the veal as I like a bit of age to the meat.
I know how they get to this stage, but would not comment on how as it would offend the veggies and like.

Trying to be a bit PC here ;)

It used to be a popular meat and I remember having it as a child. Also I have had suckling pig abroad.

I have no particular feeling about meat production, so long as the animals do not suffer unduly. If one is a meat eater or enjoys dairy then it involves slaughter. Not many people will keep these animals as pets.

Is this the same thing as Rose Veal? If so, I'm still trying to get some - my butcher says he can't shift enough to make it worth getting an animal in. Far from being cruel, Rose veal is a good way of using up the male cows from the dairy industry, it is a rose colour because they get to walk about a bit and also it is grown in Britain instead of the poor welfare standards often associated with non UK produced meat.

That's the one Ollie. I think it was on HFW or countryfile. If people don't buy the veal the animals are just slaughtered & disposed of, pet food I possibly. They have a good life from what was reported. I will look out for it. Wonder if Tim has tried it?
