Title: cooking with sorrel
Post by: pigeonseed on September 25, 2009, 22:28:32
My sorrel plant is taking over and I'd never found anything that great to do with it.
Now I've tried this recipe we love it and have eaten it a few times. so the sorrel might not take over after all...

gongura pachadi - a veg puree/pickle from Andhra Pradesh in India. I thought 1066 might be especially interested in it.
Gongura is an unrelated sour plant also called sorrel in English, but I tried it with our own sorrel and it's great.

4 big handfuls of sorrel leaves, cut out thick stalks, chop roughly
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp fenugreek seeds
chilli and salt to taste
half a cup of oil

for adding at end: (optional)
few curry leaves
1 tsp mustard seeds

1. fry the cumin and fenugreek seeds in oil till splutter.
2. fry the sorrel leaves in oil for a few minutes, till soft.
3. add chilli and salt
4. then if you want to add these - splutter the mustard seeds and broiwn off the curry leaves and add to the sorrel.

It's DELICIOUS with rice (and oily!) - but it takes the coating off your teeth!!!  ;)

perfect for people with dentures then  ;D

sorrel sauce is fab, especially with fish - here's just one

I quite like it in salads - I grow the lovely red streaked variety so it looks good as well

If you have dentures, I think your teeth will keep getting smaller and smaller each time you eat it  ;)

Yes I've heard of sorrel sauce with fish, I know it's a very old tradition. But I've never tried, we rarely eat fish. I do keep meaning to find time to go to buy fish from the fishermen in Hastings, but I never get round to it.

Must try harder...
