Title: How big should celeriac be right now?
Post by: grawrc on September 25, 2009, 22:16:45
I have some celeriac which are about 3-4 inches high. I think they ought to be much bigger by now and suspect that the bed they are in should have had manure added and that I forgot. (The rabbits have had a go too! :-[) I don't know that they will reach usable size. Can you confirm? If so I'll dig them up, enrich the bed and start again with something different (I think that bed will be alliums in my rotation).

Hi Grawc, mine are about the same, have you been taking off the leaves?

My plants are over a foot high and most of them are 4" or more in diameter. They need a very long growing period. It's best to start them off really early under warmth. I manure the celeriac bed in November at least 6" deep and cover with cardboard weighted down with bricks. A light digging over in Spring and the bed is ready for planting out the seedlings after the last frost. This year I planted leaving 10" between plants and have been watering daily for the past couple of weeks since there has been no rain. They need lots of water - as mentioned in previous threads.

Thanks Tricia! I have grown celeriac successfully for quite a few years but this year has been very "busy" in the worst possible sense and although they were sown at the right time I think I may inadvertently have planted them out into an alien environment!!! Hence the post. I may just forego celeriac this year and ensure that they go in the right bed next year.

Sorry I wasn't very clear about what I meant!! Anyway I'll have another look at them this morning and probably dig them up.

Ha! They have been reprieved! When i checked them today they are as you describe - about 7 inches high and roots golfball size, so I gave them a tasty mulch of vintage 3 year old compost and a jolly good degging and told them to behave!!

All

I started mine off in modules but with terrible organic compost and they struggled for months.  I finally planted them out about a month ago and the leaves are only around 2 inches tall - obviously way behind where they ought to be!  I'm going to leave them in and see what happens and then try again next year I think.  Maybe I should try and cover them to give them a semblance of a chance!?!

I've never had any luck with celeriac. Last year, OH has even bought a tray of celeriac in modules which grew ok, but were a bit holey in the end.
