Title: what do you give to friends ?
Post by: macmac on September 23, 2009, 23:01:58
I know we all share- it's the nature of gardening but what do you share with friends that you don't use a lot of yourself ?
I always grow basil in the greenhouse border and I chuck it (a culinary term  ;))over roasted toms ,squeeze it and sniff when I visit the greenhouse but apart from that  if ever I give anyone tomatoes I scoop  a handful of basil as well,I give away a lot of parsley.Red cabbage love it in coleslaw and pickle quite a bit as my 8year old granddaughter loves it -she eats raw lemons as well :o  but give loads of them away. I can't resist growing this stuff and I suppose re the nature of gardening we get a lot of swapsies :)

Asparagus peas!

Like most people I thought they sounded intriguing, until I tasted one.  ::) The problem is, I have a friend who is a freak of nature massive fan of the things, so I'm destined to grow them forever.   ???

That's the upside.  ;D Sadly they taste of neither asparagus or peas (both of which I love).  ::)

Its Chrysanths with me. I always have a glut of them and they last so long. We are the only ones on our site that grow them so folks are always glad of a bunch.

Chillies - I grow lots of different ones but don't eat any of them. Luckily my daughter and family love them.

Artichokes - Don't like them at all but my husband and the rest of the family do.

Cardoons - same as artichokes.

Figs - as above.

Spinach - yuk!

Exactly, they taste of themselves, I can see why people are put off, because people's expectations are that they will be like one or the other, but they're an acquired taste.  We love them, and grow them every year.  A nice easy snack.

We also grow asparagus and peas, both of which we love, each with their own distinctive taste.
 :P :P :P :P

I grow a row of garlic but we don't use it much in cooking, so give most of it away. It's just become a tradition to grow it, one of the few things to plant in Oct/Nov.

Anything I have too much off. But stuff that goes down well are any jams, chutneys or pickles made. Then stuff that can't normally be found in shops, is expensive or just better picked straight from the plot, such as winter squash, yellow or round courgettes, exotic salad and oriental leaves, sweetcorn, broad beans (always too old in the shop), asparagus etc.
