Title: Brassica Bed for over wintering
Post by: Psi (Pronounced 'Si'!) on September 23, 2009, 08:16:20
Hi all

I have a brassica bed all ready and prepared but I am not sure what to put in - especially this time of year.  I have another bed with kale and PSB so something other than that might be good.  I am thinking maybe broccoli and caulis but have no idea which varieties would be good.  Can anyone suggest crops for me?

Also, when i finally plant the bed do I need to net it this time of year?

Thanks for the advice.

For caulis 'All Year Round' can still be grown from seed ... I live in the south so might make a difference for you !

How about buying some savoy type cabbage plants ??  Some of the seed companies will supply a selection of brassica plants ... that way you can work out what you really do like and grow then again next year !!

I would net for pigeons - they seem to love brassicas !

My 4 rules when planting out brassicas are

1  plant upto first leaves

2 puddle in

3 sprinkle slug pellets round plants

4 cover with pigeon proof netting - small mesh at sides large mesh on top[ so snow does not collect and bring the whole lot down].  It has to be high enough for what you are growing.
Hope this helps.

if you like the winter salads such as mustards, mizuna, mibuna (all brassicas) then I would sow those now, generally frost hardy and no need to net in my experience
