Title: Any ideas? Warning - it doesn't look pretty
Post by: Lavender on September 18, 2009, 20:22:25
I left some pepper plants to soak in a tray - when I came back a couple of hours later I moved the pots and found this floating in the water :

It's all ended up in a tangled pile, but when I found it the green bits were all floating separately, but not responding to a prod (drowned or never alive in the first place?).  The red/white bits are all of a piece, though there's a lot of them, if you see what I mean.  I haven't a clue what it is but I don't like the look of it  :o  Also there were a few rather dessicated bits lying outside the water tray.

I'm probably going to regret asking; does it have any sort of odour?

I must say aliens or odour never occurred to me  :)  I've just had a very cautious sniff, and there is definitely no discernible pong.  I suppose I should have photographed it before fishing it out of the tray because in a pile it definitely looks worse.  The green bits look almost synthetic - very bright, kind of dayglo really.  It's the pink/white/red gloop that terrifies me most.  Without going into too much detail, it looks like the innards of something.  I'm pretty sure it's not though.

Thanks for looking - I know it's horrible.  Any ideas of who/where I might send this if none of the guys here can identify it?  It's currently in a plant pot by my front door - what are the chances of it grabbing me in the night? :o

I must admit, the lurid colours confused me. Does the green stuff look as unnaturally lurid in 'the flesh'?  ???

I zoomed in on the image and the 'lumps' looked like they were enclosed within a membrane of some description, then I thought the pink/white stuff looked like regurgitated prawns... then I decided I was hungry and ordered a pizza.  ;D

Last year I found a dead rat on my plot, with it's belly cut open, and then I found it's guts at the other end of the plot :-X
If this is some rats guts, I think it has been having a nibble at every thing.

You're kidding me, right?  ;D  I think it's shiny partly because I fished it out of the tray of water.  When I lifted the green bits out (with the aid of a plant marker) some of them fell to bits.  As to what they actually feel like - well that would involve bare fingers - I don't think it's going to happen  ;)

Yes sholls, the green really is vivid and quite unnatural looking.  And all of that about membrane and prawns is right too - it does look like that, but again I think it's because it was in water.  I think it's not something's guts because it hasn't attracted any flies.  This really is becoming horrible.  :-[

No fear hippydave - I definitely don't feel like eating the peppers, even though this stuff was nowhere near them.

I have partially cracked this one.  Eagle eye allotment friend spotted a cardboard box on the same shelf as the tray in which this lot was dumped.  The box has very bright green bits on it, and sure enough you can see where the green surface has been scratted off.  It's not chewed through - only the surface has been clawed or scraped with teeth.  So that's the green stuff accounted for (phew).  It will also take care of the bits of white too.  The "prawn" looking stuff might also be off another part of the box or from some other papery stuff in the greenhouse, I need to check.  Now I look closer, there's some dry bits lying around outside near the courgettes, which don't look at all sinister - they look like little bits of chewed up and spat out paper.

Theory - a mouse in the house has been stripping that box and placing the stuff in the tray, perhaps with a view to a new home for babies.  I know they do this stashing thing with leaves.  A couple of years ago I lost a few trays of cauli - every leaf was stripped and hoarded between the trays.

What do you guys think?  I must say I'm a lot happier with the mouse theory than with alien poo, prawn regurgitation or the slime that came in from the cold  ;D

So you can rest in your beds, I'll try to get a photo tomorrow of the dried up stuff and the box so you can see what you think.

Thanks for replying everyone, hope I didn't freak you out too much.

That may well be it if it has the consistency of paper. I've seen mice doing things like that.
