Title: Saving Borlotti
Post by: Squash64 on September 13, 2009, 17:22:37
A plotholder showed me her borlotti beans this morning and asked how she should save them.  I've never grown them so I said I would ask on here.

She had tried drying them but found they lost their lovely colour and went brown.

Can they be frozen?

The only reason I am called Borlotti is when I first got the allotment, Nick, who is Italian, was sitting there shelling beans and I helped him and talked to him.  Then he gave me a bucket full, which I didn't really want, need, but he insisted and I took them home.  Didn't know what to do with them, apart from a few in soups, so put them in the freezer.  Don't tell Nick but I composted them after a year in the freezer, but think they freeze will and the Italians love them.  Most people love these beans but I prefer runner beans.

Thanks for the reply about Borlotti, Borlotti  :)

Did you find that they froze okay?

Good luck with your soup!

Yes, they froze OK, but ask someone else, but I only used a few.  Soup takes good, after adding what was suggested.  Tom soup a bit watery, might add some cornflour.  Computer upstairs, keep having to go downstairs and stir.

Hi Squash, it was the advice I was given, just shell them and put them straight in a tub in the freezer.
