Title: Hardy geraniums
Post by: caroline7758 on September 13, 2009, 08:12:45
I cut backmy hardy geraniums before I went on holiday (early August) . Although the foliage has come back nicely there is no sign of a second flush of flowers. I'msure they usually come back quicker than this. Am I just being impatient or could there be a problem?

I tend to cut mine back a little earlier than that.  More or less after they have flowered profusely! Sometimes they are still flowering reasonably well  but I know if I leave it too late then the flowers are poor for the second flush.  Of course it does depend on which gers you are growing!  ;)

Yes someofmine were stillflowering, and as you are further south than me, we probably do about the same! Have yours flowered again this year?

I cut mine back in late july, with the same result as you. But the bonus will be in the big plants I can divide soon.

I have loads of varieties so the weather has had something to do with it. I believe the light levels were down a bit this year.

If you are dividing, do it in place and leave half the plant in the ground but wait until the ground gets a bit wetter. pot the rest of the divisions on and plant in place next spring.

Ah well, glad to know it's not just me. And thanks for the advice. I love hardy geraniums, as Alan Titchmarsh would say, they are such good do-ers!
