Hi I am new to this forum. please could anybody help. I am thinking of moving some fruit trees from my garden to the allotment, 3 apple 1 cherry and 2 greengage, the trees are young I have had them 2 years, my main question is, am I too late to train the trees along wires rather than letting them grow tall.
You could have a go at training the apples along wires, you may have to do a bit of drastic pruning and wait until new branches grow where you want them. It's really only worth having a go with spur bearing apples on dwarfing rootstocks though - tip bearers and vigorous varieties like Bramley are not suitable. It is easier to start from scratch with new trees.
I wouldn't attempt to grow greengage or cherry along wires either, they really seem to do better here grown as a bush form tree.
