I just read about making tomato wine so I tried a gallon.
I started it on Aug. 4th with SG of 1195. Racked the second time on Sept. 5th SG 0.990. It is clearing up and will be a very faint blush wine, almost clear. Time will tell how it will turn out.
Has anyone else tried this?

This is the recipe that I used. It turned out OK. Not the best wine I ever made but good enough to drink.
3 1/2 pounds red tomato's
1 cup raisins
1 1/0 pounds sugar or bring SG to 1.090
2 1/2 tsp acid blend
1/4 tsp tannin
1 tsp yeast nutrient
water to make a gallon
Wash tomato's, cut into pieces, put in straining bag. Mash and squeeze juice into primary.
Keep all pulp in bag and tie top, put bag into primary. Stir in all ingredients except yeast.
Cover with thin cloth and leave for 24 hours.
After 24 hours add yeast, cover again and stir daily, check SG and when about 1.010
(about 3 to 5 days) lightly press pulp. Rack into secondary, add air lock.
I racked mine 4 times before bottled.

Have given it a taste or two...or three already. Not bad but will be much better in a year or so...if there is any left.

Neil ask about a bit of an up-date on this wine. It turned out pretty good, mellow and smooth. I have one bottle that I put away for about a year or more to see how it does. Going to make anothe batch soon.
does it taste at all like a tomato is in it?
No it does not have a real tomato taste more of a white wine taste, just a hint of tomato

I really want to give wine making a try and this looks the most interesting. I wonder what it would be like if the tomatoes were roasted first?

Interesting as I once read they do not make decent wine.
Pup, did you use white raisins or brown?
I'd imagine that would make a difference in flavor. A lot of the varietal wine recipes have raisins added
I've noticed plus the tannin both of which probably make it taste more like a wine
and less like the vegetables or other fruits used.
Very eager to hear how you like the tomato wine if you can keep your greedy fingers off the bottle til it ages ;D
well now Miss grannie I used brown rasions as that was all my wife had in the kitchen. As to keeping my greedy fingers off the bottle....I look it over and turn it every once in a while trying hard not to drink the last bottle for a while longer

From that it sounds like the wine color doesn't depend on the grapes being white. Interesting. Wine making has many quirks to it- guess that's why it is so much fun.
