Title: Still eating strawberries
Post by: Kea on September 02, 2009, 15:21:59
Just thought I'd put in a little plug for my new strawberry variety. I planted some Malling opal plants in early spring and the first fruit arrived at the end of May. I wasn't expecting much as it's their first year but they fruited well for several weeks and then nothing then a few weeks ago lots of flowers appeared again and I'm getting lots of lovely huge dark red strawberries (which the slugs also love unfortunately) they are really tasty and seem to keep well as well.

What a pleasant bonus this time of year with everything else fizzling out!

Kea - did you plant them according to the Dobies suggested spacing?

QuotePlant Strawberries 45cm (18") apart with 75cm (2½') between each row

I'm just wondering because I see a lot of plot holders cram them in quite tight and get a good crop, but I spaced mine very widely last time and got rampant weeds and not much fruit  ::)

I'm going to try again - this one looks extremely interesting.  Thanks.

Mine are closer than that...I think they are about 12" apart. The first strawberries I planted 4 years ago were planted further apart and they didn't do as well.
