Hi
I am looking to sow over wintering onion sets - can anyone recommend any and when I ought to be sowing them? Ideally I'd like to try some red ones. I havent done them before so would be grateful
Psi
We are growing Radar again cos we had such good results this year. I do know that others on here grow some reds so hang on and someone else will reply
Our lottie shop stocks Radar and "electric" which is red... I tend to put them in at October half term but will start earlier this year... :)
we're putting ours in the weekend we're back from cornwall, sept 25th, we use senshyu yellow onons and a red, no name but performed well :)
I bought red Barron ( i think that's what they are called) from the pound shop and they were great, i will be looking out for them again.

We picked up 1/2 lb of a new one for us, 'Shakespear' from the plot shop at the weekend - will plant out with our saved garlic mid October
We'll be sowing Senshyu seed in trays this weekend anorl ;D
Hi Psi, I also had Yellow Senshyu sets last year, they sell them loose by the pound in The Clockhouse, I bought and planted mine early October last year, they sell the reds in packets but they are dearer and you don't get any where near as many. ;D ;D ;D
My horticultural society just sell Radar, which were on sale from last Sunday. Most people plant them late September through mid-October.
Is that Newton Park Horticultural Society Flighty?
When do you crop winter onions & would they go in this years alium bed if not where would they go?
Sinbad7 yes it is! Are you a member?
grannyjanny, our onions are going in the ex brassica beds, after they have had well rotted muck put on..I think they're ready about june-ish..we're also doing long red florence and senshyu from seed :)

it's a frenchi seeds said sow august to overwinter, tried it last year and it worked ;D

If you put overwintering onion in the ex brassicas where do you put your carrots in the spring?
our carrots and parsnips have their own, 18" tallx2' wide beds that have new soil put in every year :)
Ok kids, taken this all on board. Thanks kev - will get myself own to clockhouse and check it out. What sort of spacing did you use? I am thinking of getting as much in as possible - would 6" squares be ok? (i.e 6 inches between rows/sets?)
Cheers
I plant mine about 6 inches apart, but you can go as near as 4 inches between sets, I go for six so I can hoe in between them. ;D ;D ;D
I like Red electric and Silvermoon, both resist bolting well which can be a problem with autumn sown onions. I also plant a hoe's width apart! ;D

So it does!... Must admit I find the Franchi packets hard to translate sometimes :D... well I've got two packs so it's worth a crack.... got some Red Baron off a friend too....

Our local radio gardening expert says to follow on with onions, garlic and leeks where you have dug up potatoes.

Glad to hear that as that's what I'm about to do (swap leeks for shallots), just preparing the bed now for a planting of all three at the end of October.
We've put brassicas in our potato bed as it's the biggest bed. It's our first year so all very new to us.

QuoteOver-wintering onion sets should be put in this month; a 200g pack contains roughly 50 sets, which – spaced 4in apart – is enough to plant two 8ft-long rows. You'll find several varieties. Radar and Senshyu Yellow mature in June (though you can start using them in May, while the foliage is still green). For mild red onions to use raw in salads, grow Electric which is ready from late June.
... hope this helps ;)
