Hi
Did anyone ever leave summer crooknecks to grow into winter squashes?
I've got the ones from realseeds, scroll down here
http://www.realseeds.co.uk/courgettes.html
I understand that they are supposed to be a winter squash botanically speaking so I wondered whether they could be grown on and stored for the winter and whether they taste good mature?
My problem is, although they are absolutely lovely and so much nicer than courgettes, I cannot cope with their productivity at this point! On the other hand I wouldn't want to waste them by growing them on into something not worth using.
Thanks
Hiya, earlypea..welcome to a4a ;D
sorry, don't grow crooknecks but someone should be along soon :)
Same dilema here! looking forward to any answers. Some of mine are turning a more orange colour like buternuts, so I'm guessing they can be overwintered.
Welcome to A4A Earlypea... not grown them myself... most Winter Squash can be put to some culinary use.... even if only "Pumpkin" leek and potato soup, or if particularly insip "Spicy Pumpkin" soup... :)
i haven't got an answer either as mine didn't germinate this year :'(
I think we'd better eat them :P
An American member PMed me to say these are well established in the US and do not store well. You can apparantly freeze them like courgettes.
Thifasmom - My first ones didn't germinate either. Seems they like to be sown a little later than their friends the marrows and outdoor cucumbers. So try again next year - well worth it!
We had some from real seeds last year and I bought them as Summer squash. They were so prolific I had plenty to freeze and give away
