Title: courgettes and holidays

Just had a week away on holiday but my friend didn't pick the courgettes.I returned to half a dozen large marrows.Does this mean the plants are blown out now or can I expect more courgettes? There is no sign of any flower now.Any tips would be great.

Pick them off, might force the plant into more flowers and fruits.

Yes, they may well start again. if you pick off the marrows.

marrows do keep very well.

peel them cut them long ways take out the centre seeds, make them look like a boat (keep the seeds for next year or dry and eat) and rub with oil, bake for 20 mins then fill with a mix of cooked onion a little chopped cooked bacon and some passatta then grate a little cheese over the top an bake for another 20 mins. (180c)

Call them low calorie pizzas Like the french sticks they put pizza topping on.

You can leave the peel on for cooking but don't eat it, scrape the marrow off.

We've been really bad at catching the courgettes before they've become huge, but they're still yummy and the plants are still producing lots of fruit, more than we can eat anyway!
We discovered this recipe last week, it's delicious and simple, and especially good for over sized courgettes.

Courgette Casserole

900g (2lb) coarsely grated courgette
1 garlic clove, chopped
2 small onions, chopped
115g (4oz) butter
115g (4oz) breadcrumbs
225g (8oz) fresh parsley, chopped
3 eggs, lightly beaten
110g (4oz) Parmesan cheese, freshly grated

*Preheat oven to 180C/350F gas 4
Butter a 20cm (8in) baking dish with approx 1.5 liter (2 3/4 pint) capacity
*Put the courgettes in a colander and leave to drain
*Meanwhile, saute the garlic and onions in the butter until soft
*Add the courgettes, breadcrumbs, parsley and eggs to the onion.  Mix together well season to taste.
*Pour into the buttered dish and cover the top with the Parmesan. Bake for about 45 Min's until the top is brown and crisp. Serve immediately.

It's supposed to serve 6-8 as a side dish, or 4 as a light lunch, but we liked it so much, oh and i ate the lot!  Hope you like it too!

A lottie mate gave us a huge courgette that thought it was a marrow,it weighed 10lbs : I'ts now bubbling away in two demijohns having yielded 2 gallons of wine :)  When we were chopping it up I thought the final wine would be pretty grim but having fermented in a bin for 5 days it smelled almost melon like :)
