Aubergine, basil and Okra... from the big greenhouse... :)
i am so envious, i could spit :P
now tell me when you started that blinking ochro, when you transplanted them, where are they now,
%$&^%I&^%I%&*%&*%&%
aaaaaaarrrrrrghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i want to grow ochroes successfully too :'( :'( :'( :'(
I'll have to look up the timings Rekellah... but they were ready by the Open Day on 6th June so were transplnated about then. Did a dozen but only 5 took. Been in the big greenhouse border ever since. Never managed to get beyond seed leaves before.. :-X
Lovely, aubergines are a big favourite in our house so will def grow some next year, can you only grow them in the greenhouse? Basil looks really good and the okra is huge, only tried it in curry, never cooked with it though. :)
Lushy x

i have never gotten them beyond seed leaves either, i grew 7 successfully till transplant then only one survived :-\. it has given me an ochro about the size of my pinky finger ::). but it has now leafed up beautifully and has quite a few flower buds on it but its not very tall about 15 inches ::) but maybe it will give me a few more.
what variety are you growing it looks like it has a reddish tinge to its colouring.
by the way did i say i was so jealous.
Variety was something like "Burgundy Red"...
Despite the wettest July on record Lushy we have our best ever Aubergine crop (in another greenhouse!) If you are in the Deep South you may be able to grow them outside. People on here have managed it... I've seen them doing well outside, in the Dordogne... ;D

I'm not as far south as the Dordogne and I grow mine outside.
My plot neighbour Joe is growing aubergines outside this year, and he's already picked some!
I took this photo this morning

I knew it was possible. Thanks for the proof... :)
do you know the variety that your plot neighbour is growing Flighty?
1066
I'm not flighty but mine are Early Purple Long.
1066 I'll ask him but it's possible that he won't know!
;D ;D
(http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk187/thifasmom/smilies/gaah.gif) OK so i wish you all would just stop it!!! not only can i not succeed with ochros but aubergines are seriously trying to wind me up as well, every year i try to grow them outdoors and fail abysmally. this year not only did they get put outside but i also built a custom made mini greenhouse around them, so they could get the best of both worlds. i had an extra plant and gave it to my neighbour to grow in his greenhouse but under the strict instructions not to succeed if i was failing or appear to be failing, today he told me with the biggest grin he could muster (the old bugger) that he have three young fruit on his plant. and what do i have ..... bugger all >:(.
on a more positive note Thifasmom, you may not have aubergines but you do have great emoticons 8)
BTW - I'm in a similar position, gave a plant to a friend, and yes its producing fruit, but in a greenhouse :-X

some friends and plants have no loyalty ;)
The Yacon are about three feet tall too, and the sweet potatoes are making a bid for world domination. I lost one of the Water Melon Plants, but there are two on the other one swelling nicely... ::)

I lost my only watermelon and only have a cantaloupe left. It has 2 fruit also swelling nicely although the plant doesn't look all that good. I planted the melons in a hotbed and I think there was a huge ants nest in it that undermined the roots >:( :'(. The watermelon had a lot of fruit setting on it before it turned it's toes up :(
I'm impressed with the okra!
Have you got enough for a curry yet?! ;)
I'm afraid I'm also having a bumper aubergine year, the Mohican white ones have gone mad with about 6 fruits per plant, and the long purple have fewer fruits but are an impressive length for a change.
As for melons....well, I think one plant has one melon set! About par for the course for me...... ::) :-\

I'm thinking of redefining my definition of a friend!
And back to Saddad's photo, my last lot of basil has been slugged :'(
I have a basil border of about 20' in the big greenhouse....
Oh and just cut another 6 white Cucumbers... :)
I do envy you that greenhouse :P
They yacon seems to have shot up a foot in the last two days... I'll have to find out what to do with it...
Think I'll have another go at yard long or Hyacinth beans and Amaranth next year... :)
Greenhouse envy is quite normal on here... ;)
I'm going to ignore the mention of your 20' row of basil and let you know the aramanth you sent is doing great Ishould be able to start chopming on it soon ;D Thanks Saddad
1066 my plot neighbour Joe says that his are Long Purple.
Thank you Flighty that is really kind of you to find out. Basically I've been searching for a variety that can be grown outdoors
So here's to next years aubergines (Long Purple) ;D
1066 you're welcome! He's got six plants in an east-west row with rows of climbing beans north and west of them. That way they're sheltered and get the sun virtually all day. Good luck next year!
just bookmarked this thread, as the tip about the shelter might help me a bit as the site I'm on is quite exposed
Since asking about the variety I spotted 2 tiny aubergines tucked away in the foliage of my plant on the patio - so there is some hope for this year, but certainly not a bumper crop!
Thanks again

Same variety I mentioned earlier. You can get the seeds in Wilkos.
Edited to add:
I have a feeling I might have some seeds you could have. Would you like me to check?
I bought a Long Purple from Saddad's open day. It 's performing much better than my Black Beauties. Does anyone here save seed from aubergines? Is this an appropriate variety? How and when, please?
Personally I pick them up at Wyevale... at 50p a packet... :-X
Oh those okra!!-must try again.
As for aubergines-a bumper crop this year(neglect rules?).
I've just bought some okra seeds in the Wyvales seed sale, ever the optomist...my Long Purple aubergines are coming along nicely too... ;D
There's a Wyevale 50p sale then, is there? Not trying to tempt me, are you?
Who moi!? :o :o :o :o ;D
My early purple aubergine is outside and I've only just spotted a fruit around 4" long.
I've another plant, Calliope (?) that has a lovely little one growing on it. Hadn't realised that I should have had them in the greenhouse. :-\
Mine's chock-a-block with Brandywine tomatoes at the moment which have taken over everything and I'm fighting to retrieve my cucumbers from the jungle in there.

We don't have a Wilcos here! So I would love it if you do have a few spare for me to try.
I was thinking of going over to our (renamed Wyvales) and having a rumage ......
They should still be on the stands at the moment... I prefer to rummage though... ::)

What with Jenny`s problems my polytunnel has become something of a jungle-I waded my way through today and there was this chap who claimed to Stanley -Sadly I am only Dr Burridge so he wandered away :)
Joe, my plot neighbour, picked another handful of good colour and size aubergines off his Long Purple plants today!

thifasmom, perhaps you could try "Slim Jim" aubergines next year which are small and thin. I always failed at growing the big ones so this year planted the small "Slim Jim"- some outside and some in the walk in cold frame. The ones outside produced earlier for some reason and they get part shade. My main problem has been flea beetles.

yes grannieannie, I'm seriously thinking of trying some of the slimmer aubergine varieties as i so do love my aubs. i am only used to the big purple ones but it looks like i will have to broaden my choices next year and try something new.
Thifasmom - Hi and appologies! :-[
I now have 5 baby aubergines. And I'm so proud of 'em!
I ended up bringing the plant indoors and putting it on a small table near a sunny window and this seems to have encouraged it no end. I was a bit worried about pollination, but someone told me they are self polinating. Any chance you could move 1 of your plants indoors?

well now i really feel friendless :'(
no i won't be moving them inside it'll mean digging them up and i just don't feel like going down that road.
i'll just have to patiently wait for next seaeson and try again with other varieties :-\
Hadn't realised yours were in the ground. Shame. But I'll be in a similar position next year as I'm going to grow mine in the ground at my plot, so will have to devise some protection from the elements.
In the meantime the slugs are still doing their best to destroy my basil :'(
How many yards would you like? (Basil) ;D
just 1 healthy plant would be a start!
I think the best plan is for me to have them on the window sills. The slugs this year are monsters - and it seems no matter how many I decapitate they still keep coming.... they've just started on the tomatoes now :-X
I'm in the same boat with the aubergines, I've got a couple of very healthy looking Ophelia plants outside in Leeds with lots of lovely purple flowers but no sign of any fruit at all, it shouldn't really be a lack of pollination as we've got a bees nest under the house so the garden is always buzzing with the things so I guess it's just down to it not being warm enough? but hey ho they look pretty and it was worth a try.
that's the variety I'm growing Charlie. So there's hope yet :D
