Post by: JoeCocker on August 10, 2009, 09:17:45
I lifted the remainder of my first set of carrotts this weekend, about 50% had split down the middle, what causes this, i've i left them into long?

Too much water after the skins have set... did you have the dry June followed by downpours? That would do it...  :-X

Fine to eat... the outside flesh hardens and then the core expands some more so they split... visually not impressive but great for soup..  :)

I must say I'm really pleased with my carrots and I put it down to ground preparation I gave the carrot patch a good going over with the Mantis and made a good fine tilth, I found the ones I put in without thinning out did very well finding their own space, next year I will do the same but add sharp sand to the patch that I intend to use for my carrots, parsnips beets and leeks, :)
