Title: Carrots am I too late
Post by: Digeroo on August 06, 2009, 22:40:15
I sowed some more carrots last week end July (said to July on packet) and was amazed today to find that after only a week I already have a nice row of carrots seedlings.  So I decided to throw in a few more.  Do you think I am too late?  Afterall it is only six days late and they seem to rocket away.

No,
Its never to late to sow carrots. I will be sowing another couple of rows under cloches in the autumn to see me through and then I shall sow some in a coldframe for christmas.
It is a trial to see whether they grow in a colder climate or is the extra warmth given by the protection going to help them mature.

Thanks for the replies.  Great  I love carrots.  I was sowing quick producing varieties.  Will try something else as well.  Finally got a bit of space.  The broad beans have really done a wonderful job on the soil, its a bit gravelly but digs very nicely now.  Seems the carrots do not mind the stones at all.

It will not take me six weeks to dig next year!!!

Certainly sowing carrots now it is warmer seems to get them going very fast.  I think I will make a point of warming up the soil more before I sow in the spring.  I use plastic milk bottles full of water for the courgettes, might give that a try for carrots.  Sun heats them during the day and they keep warm for several hours.  Also if it freezes they give out heat.  (Though important to remove them once they are ice because they need heat to thaw.)

Can you explain how you use the plastic milk bottles Digeroo?
