Title: Looking for Alstroemeria
Post by: flowerlady on August 02, 2009, 11:48:38
Would any kind soul by any chance grow these, and have a few seeds to spare?

I'm horrifed at the prices the shops want for the plants and I've loved them for ages ... sadly any seed that develpops from the cut sort don't seem to germinate!  :'(

Cannot help with plants, but can tell you that seed germination in Alstromeria is odd to say the least. Fresh seed only as dried dies. Sow immediately at 20c. (68f) and leave for 4 weeks. Then remove the seeds and nick the seed coating just below the dark spot which should have appeared on the seeds. Resow and keep at 10c (50f) until they grow. Do not prick out, rather pot on the whole lot in deeper pots and feed until big enough to handle. Tubers are very fragile.
Best of luck, but it can be done.
