Title: Aubergines-neglect??
Post by: cleo on July 31, 2009, 18:51:10
For a reason some may know I have been a bit pre-occupied with other matters recently.

So the plants got water but little else-today I picked a full size `Bonica` aubergine from the poly tunnel.

Makes one think???

Maybe I'll try neglect- never had much luck with aubergines!

I've never had luck either but this year tried "Slim Jim" and had the first fruits fried with tomatoes for breakfast today. They are only the size of a very thick cigar and about 4- 5 inches long. The two plants growing in the cold frame haven't produced anything but flowers so far.
The two neglected ones in partial shade have produced. Go figure.... ??? but they were tender and tasty, no bite to them and I didn't sweat them with salt prior to frying, just some egg and seasoned crumbs

i love the big fat long egg plants i have grown up with in the west indies but it appears from reading different people successes that the less known types to me at least are easier to get to fruit. I'm thinking I'll try a couple of these differing types next year.

so far my four are only flowering but not setting fruits :'(, why do i put myself through this year after year.

On one aubergine plant in the G/H i have 5 fruits of various sizes, first time ever.
The plant was bought from lidles and cost 1.69 or 1.39, will be buying more if they have any next year.

Bad year for me, no fruit set or flowers on any of my plants. They've gone in the compost today.

No.

Aubergines go a surprising colour when they are ripe and fill up with seeds, you eat aubergines unripe. Pick them when they are shiny and have a bit of give.
