Title: What Butternut squash is this?
Post by: nilly71 on July 22, 2009, 09:04:52
I was given a couple of Butternut squash plants about a month ago, the only ones i have seen in the shops are an orange colour.

Does anyone know what ones these are, or do thay start out like these?

That's a shame, they look so nice green and striped.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are you sure they're Butternut?.... THere are a lot of winter squash out there..... I thought Butternuts generally had their classic shape from the embryo stage upwards.... I can guarantee they're not Bon-Bon or Festival (wrong colour and shape) but I wouldn't want to say they definitely are or are not butternut, it's just I'd be surprised if mine were that shape ... Indeed as surprised I was to discover that although the italians distinguish between zucchini and a long summer squash.... I'm violated if I can see/taste a difference :-)

No!, But that's what the old guy told me :)
Today they look a little bit fatter, so the shape has changed slightly. They are not the normal butternut shape.

Barbara butternut looks like that even when fully grown and ripe.  Have grown them a couple of times and picture on packet is the same

I concede, looked at some Avalon and they could very well be them..... wish any of my B N were that big yet.... I've got courgettes and a pumpkin and the Festivals and Bon-Bons are all fruiting but the Waltham BNS and Harrier I planted are as yet not flowering.....

Hi Nilly71 if you take a look at my gallery you'll see that my butternuts from last year have the common shape and a shape like your babes .. they're definitely butternuts.

I had 4 plants and they had a lot more squashes but I was quite late putting them in so the rest were too small or didn't ripen. I must say though that I had a few meals out of the ones that did!
