Title: gem squash
Post by: grannyjanny on July 21, 2009, 07:54:24
I've got a couple of these coming in a home delivery today. Any ideas instead of the usual roast please. Can it be microwaved as an single serving like hooligan?

Wouldn't a gem be a bit big for a microwave?

Umm..... stuff it with dry rice/cous-cous, softened lentils, fried onions, dried tomatos and sultanas with some moroccan or indian-style spices and leave it in a slow cooker with a bit of stock for a day?.....

Be a bit gooey-comfort food but it's a bit chilly out there today....

as to last reply to say if a gem could go in the micowave a gem squash is a little bigger than a tennis ball

for best results simmer for about 10- 20 min depending on size mins in a large pan
(1) add loads of butter fresh ground black pepper
(2) stuff with either rice or cous cous of your choice
(3) stuff with your fav cheese with a thingy of butter in the bottom
(4) sprinkle a little mixed spice over them with some butter
(5) stuff with mince spag bol or chilli of your choice
list goes on and on
the texture of gems are a little fiberous so i think there best served with buter and pepper ive eaten these all my life grew up on them as im from south africa and were a basic veg in every supermarket or veg shop could buy them by the sack full

those are good suggestions. I'm growing some this year and hope to get a better crop than last years attempts!
But have to say I'm with Daileg and just steam/boil them then cut the tops off and add butter and pepper/mixed spice and get yourself a teaspoon and scoop away. delish!
