We just sold the last of our dinghies (the kids have grown up and none of them kept up the sailing, sad to say).
The minimum would be something like a Topper Topaz. Unsinkable and robust, but perhaps a BIT crowded for one big'un and 3 little'uns. Our one, which was in super condition with launch trolley, went for £1400.
The next size up, the Topaz Magno would suit better, but I suspect that they may go for quite a lot more. Coincidentally, there's currently one on eBay, item 160350200059. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for.
The other boat that I've enjoyed is the Wayfarer. Classic training boat, and very stable. Again, you can get a nice one for around £1500. That would suit very well, but won't be as nimble as the Topaz designs.
Finally from family experience rather than personal preference, what about a catamaran? You get get a decent Hobie Cat for similar money. But these are a bit faster and less forgiving. If you're already a good sailor, and can keep the kids under control, it might be worth a look?
But of course there are many other options - these are just the ones I know of that might suit.
Great advice - many thanks!
Graceland - South Cerney & others - but they do go to the coast each year.

I was at the east end (near Rollright) last w.e. and agree that it's lovely countryside, but window shopped at a place called Daylesford Organics where some of the prices (for clothes in particular) made me realise there are people around with far too much money :)
And far too little sense!!
