Beautiful, Digeroo!  Poppies are in a class all their own with the papery petals and fiery colors.

Not sure, though I am still alive, I think.

There was a programme on TV in which they were proving or disproving various old wives tales.  The eat poppy seed bagels and found that the next morning they failed drug tests.

PS they are weeds on my allotment, though they are not the wild variety, and have crossed with some garden ones somewhere along the line.

just did a quick  search and yes both Papaver rhoeas (field poppy) and Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) are edible. good thing too as the amount of seed i collected this afternoon and there are still more to collect I'll have enough to resow, swap and store for kitchen use.

there is a possiblity that the Papaver orientale (oriental poppy) seeds are also edible but i haven't found enough info to convince me of this as yet.

Many thanks thifasmom.  The ones in my allotment are Papaver rhoeas (field poppy) I think.
