Title: Which ones have you got?
Post by: aquilegia on October 05, 2004, 10:44:56
Seed catalogues, that is?

So far I've only had two: T&M and Chase. Every time the postie delivers something or when I go home from work (I leave too early for him) I cannot wait to see what other ones have arrived, but so far there are none.

I've ordered Simpsons, Tuckers, Suttons, Mr Fothergills and I'm sure some more. Where are they?

I know patience is a virtue. It's obviously one I missed.

Have got T&M. I've also got Suffok Herbs, Kings, and Simpsons - but think these may all be 2004 and not 2005.
I also leave far too early for the postman (which isn't difficult because he doesn't arrive until about 2pm - ooooh, what is the world coming to??)

Sarah.

Another bonus of this thread is that you're all naming companies whose catalogues I haven't got, so I've ordered even more! Thanks.

I have just posted my comparison of three catalogues on the edible board, T&M, HDRA and Suttons. HDRA come out on top so far from both price and choice.

I will also compare a number of others.

My list of seed suppliers looks something like this:

http://www.kenmuir.co.uk/ - Site of the fabled gardener Ken Muir. Excellent advice on fruit. Some good bargains to be had.

http://www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk/acatalog/index.html - Excellent seed suppliers that work out fairly cheep.

http://www.seedsofitaly.sagenet.co.uk/default.htm - Excellent seed site that supplies some unusual items.

http://www.edwintucker.com/Tuckers%20Seeds%2002/seeds%20index.htm - Very very good seed supplier, especially good for spuds, but I am biased as my family have used this outfit for over 50 year.

http://www.vidaverde.co.uk/ - Collection of unusual and heirloom varieties.

http://www.thompson-morgan.com/ - Speaks for itself

www.chilternseeds.co.uk/ - Suppliers of huge range of seeds, good value for money, many unusual

http://www.unwins-seeds.co.uk/supplier_search.asp - Seeds again, no on line store.

http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~nfarley/thomas-etty/vegetables/intro.htm - Thomas Etty Esq. does not sell F1 hybrids or Genetically Modified Seed

http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/ - Mail Order Seeds and Garden Games, Gardening sundries, monthly gardening jobs and what's in colour in the garden this month, ideas and inspirations for hanging baskets

http://www.wildflower.org.uk/ - wild flower seeds and advice.

http://shop.rareplants.co.uk/ - pricey, but good if you're looking for something out of the ordinary.

http://www.janelanenursery.co.uk/ - Excellent web site to buy seeds/herbs/fruit/veg plants etc, very good value baskets

http://www.dobies.co.uk/ - Vegetable and ornamental seeds and plants by mail order. Also some gardening equipment and advice.

http://www.exhibition-seeds.co.uk/ - vegetable and bulk seed orders, interesting onions! .

http://www.mr-fothergills.co.uk/ - Well know brand, covers all sorts. Some organic and heritage varieties.

http://www.nothing-but-seeds.co.uk/ - Some exotic seeds plus tomatoes, chillies. Pepper.

http://theseedsite.co.uk/ - Not sales but more about seeds. Collection, Harvest, Storage, germination, tips, etc.

http://www.mammothonion.co.uk/ - Exhibition and vegetable seed sales and advice.

http://www.secretseeds.com/ - Small supplier based in Devon, wide choice of varieties.

http://www.tamarorganics.co.uk/ - Excellent site with online sales of seeds and equipment. Totally organic.

I forgot to mention my vidaverde catalogue came through - not going to order from them this year. The service was very speedy, but I am a little bit disappointed with the results (perhaps the weather contributed to it, and the seeds were probably produced in Spain).

Gawd, you lot cant help yourselves can you? You can onlygrow so much from seed you know  ;).

I usualy stick to T&M (and perhaps one other). I find T&M have all i need in the way of seed.  My runner beans in particular are one of their own ones (White lady - Mmm! the best ;D)

Got my Tuckers, got my tuckers doodeedooddeoeoeoeoeo!

How can you resist them, they are free, well most of them, most are full of tantalising pics of veggies and flowers, and the prices vary so you can compare, and some have interesting snippets of info about sowing dates, cropping, little hints and tales.

you are lucky that you can afford to stick with the most expensive seed catalogue!! :o

Who me? Are T&M expensive compared to otheres then? I thought the prices were reasonable.

When you say free, i take it you mean the catalogue not the seed. I should think most seed cats were free. It'd be a bit mean of a seed co. to charge more than first class postage for one.

Thing is if a seed company doesnt have what you want  it doesnt matter how much they charge for their products.  ;D

I got tuckers on Saturday. I did my seed price comparison thing and Kings and tuckers came out cheapest so I'll be buying from those.

Richard - T&M for basic ordinary things seem to work out about twice the price of the others. But they do have some lovely flowers...

Tuckers' website had been down for a few days but was up and running on Saturday so I requested a catalogue and it's here already, I am most impressed.

On your recommendation just done a search for tuckers seed. Only one i came up with was; Edwin Tucker seed of devon. Is this the same?

If so the website seems to be working ok now.

Rich - yes - Edwin Tucker.

I've found another one (flowers etc, not veg): www.plantworld-devon.co.uk. Danger - they have about 20-30 aquilegias and I don't have most of them.

You should Richard.  T&M are outrageously expensive and I really  do not rate their service.  However, their catalogues are gorgeous to look through, almost like mini encyclopedias!
I personally think it pays to shop around.  Some companies have interesting little deals, or freebies if you spend 'X' amount of pounds, or free postage and packing.  Mind you, it depends how much time you have on your hands to plough through all the different books.  Me, I would rather sit reading than watching Eastenders on the telly! ;D

Richard, Have a look at my thread on the Edible Board called Seed catalogue Comparison. You will see most of the big names come out worst on price and pack size, the smaller suppliers like Tuckers/Kings/HDRA work out much better value and in some cases much better/more interesting choice!

Richard, Did you mean the Heritage list that Hydra supply to members of their seed library? If so, you can see a list of the varieties they have grown this year. There is a link on the Heritage Seed Library page to something like "varieties grown this year". Otherwise, yes the organicacatalogue is the place to look.

Sarah.

Call me an stick in the mud if you like but I like to stick to things i know we/I like to eat. Not that i havent experimented. I seem to try one new/differnt tomato varity each year in addition  to the usual faves (Gardeners Delight and Shirley). This year the 'trial' one was an orange type called sungella. We didnt like it  except in soup ( ;D).

It just depends what happens to be given away free in Amateur Gardening magazine (which we subscribe to).

I am though keen to try the variety 'Ferline'. Having suffered blight two years out off the last 3, I an keen to test its resistance.

One veg i will not experiment with is runner beans. 'White Lady' is the best in my veiw.

I will if possible 'experiment' with seed companies to try to get the best value seed.

2 tuckers catalogues came today. A quick read through - and I am glad I have filled out my ogc order already, but I did leave a little bit of room for an order from Tuckers. The choice of seeds this year with Tuckers isn't, imho, as great as last year's - especially in the organic seeds (though a number, they haven't secured as organic this year).

Got my T&M catalogue and have to say I was a little disappointed. Perhaps I didn't specifically ask for the veg catalogue, but all I got was a sad little flowers and veg combined one. Not much selection of veg, which I know is not their full range, there's loads more on their web site.

Oh well makes my choice easier - I will stick to kings or the Organic Catalogue. If I get any more I will get too confused  :-\

I have my wish lists written out for those, and even a basic list is still a lot of dosh. So I think i see seed swapping in my future  :D

On Saturday afternoon, I spent several happy hours filling in my order forms. Mr Aqui says I spent the whole time muttering away to myself. I said everything that I was wriitng onto the form. I turned at one point to see him grinning at me - he found it all very amusing! So hopefully my first packets of seed will be winging their way to me some time next week (or am I being rather optimistic!) I ended up spending about £45 (not including membership of HDRA and the heritage seed library!) eek - my poor cheque book.

Most impressed I am.

Posted four orders on Sunday (last week). First two packages of seeds arrived on Friday (luckily I caught the postman on my way out!) and another lot came on Saturday. Only waiting for T&M (typical that the most expensive should take the longest!)

Tuckers sent me an extra bulb of garlic free - I order two earlies and three lates, but they sent me four late (I didn't have room for it, so gave it to mum).

DT Brown sent me three free packets for ordering before end of November. Well actually they sent me two packets, even though it said three on the receipt (is it too picky to ask for the third one?) One was a pepper I was going to order from somewhere else and the other was an overwintering lettuce, that I was thinking of buying. cool!

How exciting for you Aqui!
I'm very excited, as I have just sent of an order to Seeds of Italy - but I have never heard of anyone else has used them - or had a good or bad experience of their seeds. The seeds obviously come from Italy and they seem very good value. Most excited about raddichio selection pack, pumpkin selection pack and unusual cardoon variety.
All will be revealed when they do or don't germinate I suppose!

Sarah-b, I have ordered from Seeds of Italy before.  You think they are good value now, wait until the new year when they have a seed sale!  Cheap as chips!!  Had great success from their seeds, and was pleasantly suprised by the huge amount of seed in each packet.

Received Plants of Distinction catalogue whilst I was away, and they have a veggie section, and wow what great veggies!  Some very unusual things so I fear I may be forced to place yet another order!  This really is getting out of control!!
