I've harvested 6 carrots from two entire packets of seed. I'm very close to giving up for good on carrots.

I have done three sowings of carrots - Nantes and Chatenay and have a grand total of three carrots growing.  I am obviously not alone so what is going wrong this year?

Don't we ask this question every year?

Actually, last year was my best ever - 3x20' rows & 1m2 in a raised bed.

Slugs.   :( :(

Got brutal this year with organic slug pellets.  Also germinated on kitchen roll and then sowed them.  Covered with plastic for ten days.

No problems at the slug free allotment. Unfortuneately the wretches are now arriving.

No carrots last year, loads of them this year.

My Early Nantes have done well in a dustbin for the second year running, but still no luck with any in the ground and you can't fit many in a dustbin!

I think that it is essential to delay sowing until the temperature is warm enough, usually May in Glasgow, and then keep the bed moist while germination takes place.

I have used TeeGee's method for the Autumn King and it seems to work. We will see what the outcome is.

My first sowing was April, second was May and the third was in June.  All three using a method that was very successful last year.  The first two weren't watered by hand so wondered whether they were getting too dry.  The third lot have been watered by me and the weather and still diddly.
