Title: What next?
Post by: grannyjanny on July 06, 2009, 13:10:39
I've taken up the shallots today. It's not a big area, about 5'x5'. Would it be ok to put a few potatoes in that spot for christmas. I found some Pink Fir Apple that I bought & forgot about, there's 7 tubers in the bag. I've still got garlic, leaks & spring onions in that bed. If not what would you suggest?

For me i would be putting the potatoes into bags or buckets so i could lift them into the GH or PT when the tomatoes are finnished so they grow on in a warmer inviroment.
I can,t recomend anything else to put into that spot as i don,t do it i ptrefer to rest the soil.

Not sure about Pink Fir - main crop potatoes aren't usually recommended as second croppers - and as granny points out - hard to protect them from frost if they're in a bed.

You could plant pak choi and other oriental greens as well as certain lettuces and I know of several people still sowing dwarf and climbing beans (not runners).

A few salad crops spring to mind eg Lettuce, Radish, mooli, rocket, spinach.

What to do next year is get prepared for this event and sow a few plants in pots/trays to transplant as soon as a spot becomes available.

For instance my second batch of Calabrese will be getting planted out within the next couple of weeks.

Then I will start sowing my spring greens.

Was this one of them?
Considered chicory, endive or winter radish... or a green manure...  :-\
