A few plants, especially roots will do this due to the hot dry then wet conditions.

It is probably impossible in our current weather conditions but  plants need to be prevented from going totally dry amd should be irrigated with water, perhaps more than once every day.

The split is simply irregular growth. When the plant feels the sunshine it grows. If there is not enough moisture, it splits. Plant reasoning. (I may be dying.I must reproduce to keep my species alive)

Yeh me and the plants, we sit all day and chat. Can't tell you what about because of a confidentiality clause in my seed packets.

Three years ago there was so much rain and sun in Northern Spain the melons were bursting in the fields.

i never really water hem once in and no splitting yet.  I think there can be a tendency to over water.
