Title: Posting bigger pics
Post by: Digeroo on July 04, 2009, 08:54:43
I am ok about posting pics, but they end up very small and then are repeated at the bottom as a thumbnail, so the pics ends up twice but very small.  It is possible to click on it and make it bigger but I do not think most people do this.

How do I get larger images to display?

Here is an example tiny photo

And below is another I do not want at all, how do I get rid of it.

Its all down to the facilities (software) you have at your disposal.

I have played about with your picture, I hope you don't mind!

;D I thought that would be the next question  ;D

Let me ask you some questions first;

What size camera do you have (pixels)

That is; when you put a picture on your PC/Mac what size are the pictures? e.g. my pictures come out of my camera at around 3650 x 2750 pixels.

Did you get any editing software with your camera?

Do you store your pictures in places such as Photobucket or Flickr?

As I said previously it is all down to software so to cut a long story short, answer the above questions and we will take it from ther!

My camera is 7mega pix.  This is too big so I use paint to shrink it or in this case crop it.  I then save and just attach it to the reply.

So I estimate your pictures at full size to be around 1500 x 700.

What you want to aim for to suit PC monitors is a picture about 640 x 480 where 480 is the height!

I don't use 'paintshop' but I sometimes use Corel 'Photohouse' which I believe is similar.

I used 'Photoshop' to adjust your previous picture of the frog, and sized it in 'photohouse'!

When you open paint I would say you will have some 'editing' to work with.

Before we go any further cropping and sizing are not necessarily the same thing although they both reduce the appearance of the picture.

To decide what you are going to do you must imagine how you want the picture to finally look.

Click on a title such as prepare, transform or edit your image.

You may want to crop the picture down to have the subject in the middle of the picture and cut out unecessary material around the edges.

Select the cropping tool to do this.

In doing so you will find that you enlarge your subject relative to its surroundings.

Once you have done this your image may still be too large to go on your PC monitor so it will need compressing.

In your editing bar you should find a title indicating 'Image properties' click on this then you should find something referring to 'image sizing' click on this!

In here you should find a facility to size your picture.

I find that a picture of 640 x480 fits most monitors without the need to scroll.

There should also be a facility to 'maintain aspect ratio' click this box then when you alter say the height of the picture the width will automatically and proportionally adjust your sizes.

I tend to only use the height box and I always enter the figure 480 then this will give a good height for a monitor screen and it should never be too wide for the same screen.

If you find that your picture does not need cropping then miss out this task and just use the 'resizing' facility.

Save your picture.

It is now ready for viewing at a similar size as to the one I made of your frog.

As I said I don't know what editing facilities 'paintshop' has so you might not be able to adjust colour and contrast whereas with 'photoshop' you can.

I was able to remove/adjust the highlights on your picture and sharpen the detail that your camera missed.

Yes I have done all that Pretty ok with resizing and cropping.  and then it still appears as a thumbnail.  It must be how it is attached.

What did you actually do the the pic to get to to display larger.

I think the problem lies with the location the picture is stored.

Tee Gee, myself and others store the pics on their own websites or public picture sharing sites like photobucket. If your picture is located within this website you get the default setting which is clickable thumbnails.

My picture are the same,  only ever get pictures posted that are thumbnail size.  I also use paintshop for ease.

I've never managed to get clickable thumbnails. This image is stored on this site, in my gallery and unless I'm seeing it differently to everyone else, it's a full size image, not a thumbnail?

You dont have to pay to store pics in the gallery but you are limited on pic size and total size.
If you call the pics with the img tag (bottom right of screen when viewing the pic the gallery) then it will be resized when viewed like below which is bigger in the gallery.  You can use the image tag thing for pics from elsewhere.

If you pay and use the insert pic function you get the clickable thumbail - like Digeroo below
