Title: Pressed Barley- have you ever baked with it instead of oatmeal?
Post by: GrannieAnnie on July 02, 2009, 15:16:47
I was planning on baking oatmeal cookies and grabbed a bag of what looked like oatmeal in the farmer's market but when home it reads "Pressed Barley". Have you ever baked with that?

If not, what do I do with the stuff?  It's, of course, a beeeeg bag ;D

I'll answer my own question because I wanted to bake something right now. I used slightly less of the barley since it seems more dense.  The cookies are chewier and give the jaw a bit more work out but taste practically the same to me, maybe not as nutty.

Never heard of pressed barley.   Will you use it again?   A big bag you say.

I'll use it somehow but not for cookies unless just  a small amount gets slipped in.
My Cookie Monster husband's assessment was they aren't as good as regular oatmeal cookies.

It seems that it can be made into a risotto instead of using rice. I have not tried it but saw it done on a tv show and thought at the time It was interesting, I would try it if some one made it but was not going to rush out and buy to try.
