If a lot of leaves turn brown at the same time it often means the eucalyptus is short of water.

Leaves turning brown is a stress reaction of some kind - lack of water seems the most likely culprit. Check to see whether any small new green leaves are beginning to appear.

We lose some every year.

As to water, surely they grow in deserty regions?

Yes but they shed their leaves pretty regularly -faster if short if water, or they catch fire, which comes to much the same thing  :)
