Title: nitrogen crystals/pellets what do i do with them?
Post by: flowergirl on June 29, 2009, 19:41:06
A very kind customer has given me a bucket full of green pellets and a bucket full of white crystal type pellets.  As he handed them to me he just said slug pellets and nitrogen  ???

I have had several conversations with him about the allotment and he offered me some farmers slug pellets.

I am assuming the the green pellets are for the slugs?

I think he has given me the nitrogen pellets as the allotment has not been grown on for years, but the problem is I have no idea how to use or how much to use?

Is any one familiar with these?

any advice much appreciated

A photo of each would be ideal
The white chrystals (nitrogen) you just scatter on the top of the soil about a handfull to a square yard. ( presuming its the same as mine)
I would presume you use the slug pellets much the same as the ones we get IE under brick, bords slabs etc where the slug hides and other things Ptes and wild life cant get at them

The green pellets are almost certainly the slug pellets, personally I would give them back or dispose of them & buy iron based ones which don't cause secondary poisoning instead if you need slug pellets.
The nitrogen could be several things my immediate thought is that it's urea (very strong & popular with farmers) but if possible you really should ask him to clarify what it is, even if you posted a photo of it it could be difficult to tell for sure what it is & until you know what it is there no way we can tell you how much to use.

Thanks for reply..i plan to use the slug pellets under netting where no wild life can at them.

The  nitrogen pellets look like little pearls or iced water droplets.

Sounds very like our urea... we dilute it at 1x 5ml med spoon per 2 gallons...

It's very soluble... throwing it at the soil is a waste as it washes straight out.. needs actively growing plants. Put a watering can on a weedy patch.... the change should be visible in a few days...  :)

either that, or Columbia's Finest

urea has a very high nitrogen content, and is very fast acting, so it's good for a quick fix, but if you use it a lot it will bump up the soil acidity

I tried sniffing it when i first got it blocked me nose.
I have had loads of it for years but never knew what the propper name was other than it being a high nitrogen feed.
Just been throwing it on the soil for a mid season boost on sweatcorn and on my over wintering cabbages and cauli,s at the beging of the year.

I sued to use it to green up the grass, when I could get it for free. Or you could try writing GET STUFFED GOOGLE EARTH on the lawn in big letters
